College Counseling, Guided with Clarity and Strategy
A clear, structured approach grounded in real admissions experience and tailored to how each student learns, thinks, and grows.
Choosing a college is one of the most important decisions your child will make. We guide students through this process with a clear plan, thoughtful strategy, and consistent support, so nothing feels rushed or reactive.
College counseling at Illuminos is led by Kiara Reece, who brings direct experience from the admissions offices at Vanderbilt University and UC Berkeley, along with experience as an application reader at Stanford University. She has reviewed more than 7,000 applications and understands how decisions are made and what differentiates strong candidates.
Kiara has guided hundreds of students through the admissions process, helping them gain acceptance to highly selective colleges while identifying schools that are the right fit, not just for admission, but for long-term success.
She works with a wide range of students, including those who are academically driven, those still clarifying their direction, and students with ADHD, learning differences, executive function challenges, and twice-exceptional profiles. Her approach helps each student understand their strengths and present them clearly and thoughtfully.
Kiara works with a limited number of students each year so she can remain closely involved throughout the entire process, from building a balanced college list to navigating financial aid and making the final decision.
Students move through the process with clarity, confidence, and a strong understanding of where they will thrive.

How We Work Together
Clear. Personal. Structured.
1. Start by Understanding Your Child
We begin by getting to know your child, not just their transcript, but who they are, how they think, and what they need to succeed.
This initial conversation becomes the foundation for everything that follows.
-
A thoughtful intake conversation with both student and parent
Understanding academic history, strengths, and areas of challenge
Identifying interests, motivations, and emerging goals
Discussing any learning differences, executive functioning needs, or support systems already in place
Clarifying timeline, expectations, and level of support needed
This step ensures that everything we build moving forward is tailored, not templated.
2. Build a Clear, Thoughtful Plan
We develop a structured plan with clear priorities, realistic timelines, and a carefully curated college list.
This plan provides direction while remaining flexible as your child’s interests evolve.
-
College List + Strategy Intensive (foundational step)
Balanced list of reach, target, and likely schools
Focus on fit: academic, social, and environmental
Academic and course selection guidance (when applicable)
Extracurricular and leadership positioning
Summer planning and opportunity identification
Testing timeline and strategy (SAT/ACT, if relevant)
A clear roadmap with milestones and deadlines
Families leave this phase with a clear understanding of what matters most and what comes next.
3. Work Together Consistently
Through regular sessions, Kiara guides your child step-by-step through the process, helping them reflect, write with clarity, and stay organized and on track.
Each session builds toward a cohesive, well-positioned application.

Personal statement development from idea → draft → final
Supplemental essay strategy and editing
Activities and honors section optimization
Recommendation letter strategy

Clear next steps after every session
Support between meetings for questions and guidance
This is where structure, accountability, and confidence are built.
4. Apply and Choose Thoughtfully
As deadlines approach, we ensure every part of the application is complete, polished, and aligned.
We stay involved through final decisions to help your family make a thoughtful, informed choice.
-
Final application review prior to submission
Submission strategy and deadline management
Financial aid guidance (FAFSA/CSS Profile support)
